Spotify is a digital music, podcast, and video streaming service that gives you access to millions of songs and other content from artists all over the world.
Basic functions such as playing music are totally free, but you can also choose to upgrade to Spotify Premium. Either way, you can:
- Choose what you want to listen to with Browse and Search.
- Get recommendations from personalized features, such as Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Daily Mix.
- Build collections of music.
- See what friends, artists, and celebrities listen to.
- Create your own Radio stations.
Spotify is available across a range of devices, including computers, phones, tablets, speakers, TVs, and cars, and you can easily transition from one to another with Spotify Connect.
- Audio normalization balances soft and loud songs, creating a more uniform listening experience.
- Click
in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Under Music Quality, switch Normalize volume on
, or off
.
You can adjust the overall level for your environment. Next to Volume level, choose from:
- Loud: Handy for noisy environments. You’ll hear less dynamic levels.
- Normal: The default setting.
- Quiet: Handy for quieter environments.
- Find what you’re looking for with Search, including:
- Songs
- Albums
- Artists
- Playlists
- Podcast shows and episodes
On mobile and tablet, you can also use Search to browse categories such as genres, moods, charts, and new releases. Find Radio and Concerts here too.
If you don’t know a song’s title, search at least 3 words from its lyrics. Songs with those lyrics show Lyrics match in the results.
Enter your search term in quotation marks “” to narrow results to exact matches, e.g. “Let’s Dance”.
You can also enter any of these before your search term to narrow the results.

Refine your search with AND and NOT, for example:
- Kyuss AND Green - Displays results with keywords 'Kyuss' and 'Green'.
- Metallica NOT Anger - Displays all Metallica tracks except with the word 'Anger'.
Tip: You can also use + or - instead of AND or NOT.
Use any combination of the advanced search options to find exactly what you want.
- Search for a range of years but exclude some - year:1989-2013 NOT year:1993
- Find music by genre and year - genre:metal AND year:1932
Tip: This particular example may not yield many results!
- You can save anything you like in Your Library for quick access.
Find Your Library in the menu on the left.
To add something to Your Library:
- Click
on any song, album, or playlist.
- Click FOLLOW on any artist, podcast or show.
Find Liked Songs in Playlists (or under Your Library on desktop).
Note: When you
an album or artist, it doesn’t automatically like all the songs. Also, liking a song doesn’t automatically like the album or artist.
- Mix up what plays next with Shuffle. Great for long playlists, switching up your listening, or when you just don’t feel like following orders.
You can turn shuffle on for any playlist, album, or artist profile.
- Click Shuffle
in the Now Playing bar at the bottom.
- The order of songs due to play is now mixed.
Tip: Want to see how it’s changed? Check out the Play Queue. - Click again to turn Shuffle off. Songs return to their original line-up.
If you’re using the free service, you can listen to any playlist via shuffle, or select any track on playlists without the Shuffle icon
.
- Take your music and podcasts anywhere your internet can’t go.
- For Premium, you can download albums, playlists, and podcasts
- For the free version of Spotify, you can download podcasts
Note: While some podcasts feature videos, you can only download their audio.
You can download up to 10,000 songs on each of up to 5 different devices.
Note: Go online at least once every 30 days to keep your downloads. This is so Spotify can collect play data to compensate artists.
Note: You can only download playlists on the desktop app.
- When you’re online, go to the playlist you want to download.
- Switch Download on
.
A green arrow
means the download was successful.
Downloads save to Your Library.
Downloads play automatically when you lose internet, but you can use Offline Mode to make sure only your downloads play.
- Open Spotify.
- For Mac: In the Apple menu at the top of the screen, click Spotify.
For Windows: Click File in the Windows menu at the top of the screen. - Select Offline Mode.
Anything you haven’t downloaded is now grayed out and unavailable.
Not downloading? Make sure your device is ready to download:
- Check the device isn’t in sleep mode
- Check your internet connection is active
- Make sure you have enough storage space
Tip: We recommend at least 1GB free memory
Downloads not playing? Look for the download status next to your song or playlist:

If that doesn’t help, try reinstalling the app.
Note: You need to re-download your music after reinstalling the app.
Downloads removed? You might lose your downloads if:
- You don’t go online at least once in 30 days
- You reinstall the app
- You download to more than 5 devices
Note: Downloads are removed from the device you’ve used least recently
If it’s not these reasons, make sure your device can keep your downloads:
- Make sure your Spotify app is up-to-date
- If your device has an SD card, make sure it’s working OK
- Calling all tastemakers! We’ve made it easy for you to share direct from the app.
- Go to what you want to share and select
(desktop and iOS) /
(Android).
Tip: You can also right-click it on desktop or web player. - Select Share. There you can:
- Share to any social or messaging app listed.
- Choose Copy Link to paste the link wherever you like.
Note: This is the only option to share on web player. - Share a Spotify Code (more info below).
On desktop, you can also Copy Embed Code to share on websites.
The share feature will share a playlist even if you’ve made it secret. The recipient can view, play, and follow it, and they can share with others who can also view, play, follow, and share it.
Note: If you’ve set the playlist to be collaborative, any recipient can also edit the playlist.
- Spotify has a range of audio quality options to suit your device, plan, and preferences.

Podcast quality is equivalent to approximately 96kbit/s on all devices except the web player where it’s 128kbit/s.
On mobile/tablet, if you change the audio quality to low, the podcast quality will lower to approximately 24kbit/s.
Turn music quality up to hear the finer details or turn it down to save data.
Note: You can’t change audio settings when using Spotify Connect to play on another device.
- Click
in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Under Music Quality, select your preferred settings
- Keep the mood going. Spotify Radio creates a collection of songs based on any artist, album, playlist, or song of your choice. It even updates over time to keep fresh.
- You can get some lyrics plus the story behind the song with Spotify and Genius.
Note: Currently only available in English, on select songs and playlists.
You can see some lyrics as they’re sung and get info about the song such as the inspiration behind it and interesting facts.
- Listen to your favorite podcasts, and discover many more including shows with music.
- Get recommended and featured podcasts and shows.
- Save the podcasts and shows you like. New episodes then automatically save.
- Download to listen offline.
- Some episodes feature videos too.
Note: While Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship messages.
- Click Browse
in the menu on the left.
- Click Podcasts & Shows.
- Browse featured episodes, or scroll down to browse by category.
Hover over the cover art and click the play button
to start listening, or click the title to see more episodes.
Click
to control the play speed.
Click
to skip forward 15 seconds, or tap
to rewind 15 seconds.
- Watch music videos, documentaries, and exclusive video series, all from within the Spotify app.
- Use the app to play music files stored on your device, which we call local files.
Note: Files or downloads from illegal sources are not permitted.
- Click
, then Settings.
- Scroll to Local Files and switch Show Local Files on.
- Switch off any sources you don't want.
- Click ADD A SOURCE to select another folder.
Music from that folder is now in Local Files in the menu on the left.
Note: Some of your files may be protected in restricted formats. Install QuickTime on your computer to allow most of these tracks to be played on Spotify.

The iTunes lossless format (M4A) isn't supported.
If your file isn’t supported, we do our best to match it with songs from the Spotify catalog. The version we match with might differ from the original.
- Sort and filter Spotify to control how the music is listed and played. Pick an option and your device below for more information.
Sort songs in playlists
Tip: This works for Liked Songs in Your Library too.
- Click the column you want to sort by, for example:
- Alphabetically, by TITLE, ARTIST, or ALBUM.
- By most recently added, with
.
- By song duration, with
.
Tip: Adjust the app's screen size to reveal more columns.
- Click the column again to reverse the order, click it again to return to the original order.
If you created the playlist, you can also drag and drop songs into your preferred position. Just click and hold a song to move it up or down.
Sort playlists in Your Library
To reorder your list of playlists in the menu on the left, click and hold a playlist title to move it up or down.
You can also organize your playlists into playlist folders.
Sort Albums and Artists in Your Library
Select Albums or Artists in the menu on the left, and choose a Sorted by option from the dropdown menu.
With Filter on the desktop app, you can list specific content based on a search term in any playlist or Liked Songs in Your Library.
- Select Filter at the top of track listings.
- Enter a search term. Only titles containing that term are now listed.
- To return to the original listing, either clear your search or click X to remove the filter.
- With Concerts, find out when and where the artists you love are performing live.

Select your device below to find out how.
- Click Browse in the menu on the left.
- Select CONCERTS.
Note: Depending on your screen size, you may need to click MORE to reveal CONCERTS.
Click the concert you’re interested in for more details or to purchase tickets. If multiple dates are available, click
to view them.
Click CHANGE to the right of your existing location and enter your preferred town/city.
Tip: To see what shows a specific artist is playing, go to their artist profile and click CONCERTS.
- When you reach the end of an album, playlist, or selection of tracks, Spotify will automatically play similar songs so the music never stops.
- Click
in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down to Autoplay and switch Autoplay similar songs when your music ends on (green) or off (gray).
- Feast your eyes on your friends’ ears!
Friend Activity shows the listening activity of any friends or public profiles (including brands and celebrities) that you follow.
To show/hide Friend Activity:
- Click
in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Under Display Options, switch Show Friend Activity on (green), or off (gray).
Note: Your Spotify desktop window needs to be at least 1190 pixels wide for the friend feed to show.
- Crossfade lets you eliminate the silence between tracks so your music never stops.
Pick your device below to learn how.
- Click
in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down and click SHOW ADVANCED SETTINGS.
- Under Playback, switch Crossfade songs on (green).
- Move the slider to select the desired crossfade length.
- The Spotify Stations app lets you easily create stations for the music you love, all for free.
- From soundtracking your run with Runkeeper, to seeing what potential matches are listening to on Tinder, Spotify can be integrated with many other awesome apps.
Note: Your Spotify account will never be integrated with a third-party app without your explicit permission to do so. Go to your Apps page for the list of apps your account’s integrated with.
To remove the access of a third-party app:
- Log in to your Apps page.
- Find the app you want to remove and click REMOVE ACCESS.
That’s it! You can grant access to it again at any time.
- For your eyes and ears only!
By default, anyone who follows you on Spotify can see what you’re listening to with Friend Activity. If you don’t want others to know what you’re listening to, you can start a Private Session.
Note: Anything you listen to in a Private Session may not influence your music recommendations, e.g. Discover Weekly.
Select your device below to learn how to switch on a Private Session.
- Click
in the top right corner of the app.
- Select Private Session. A padlock on your profile picture indicates a private session is active.
- Repeat the steps to end the Private Session.
Note: The Private Session ends automatically when you restart Spotify, or after a long period of inactivity.
- Your profile shows your friends what you're into.
Tip: To really make it yours, add a photo and display name.
- Click the profile picture icon in the top-right corner of the app.
- Click

- Hover your cursor over Share, and select a sharing option.
